The Islanders.
(work in progress)
The Islanders is an ongoing visual exploration of the Isle of Sheppey, capturing the island’s distinctive character through landscapes, portraits, and details. Often misjudged as bleak and forgotten, Sheppey reveals a more complex reality—one shaped by its working-class heritage, resilience, and strong sense of community. Industry and shifting economic fortunes have left their mark, yet the island remains defined by the resourcefulness and pride of those who call it home. Balancing its tough, man-made elements with moments of natural beauty, the project reflects both an outsider’s perspective and a deep appreciation for Sheppey’s people. Rooted in Higginson’s own connection to the island, The Islanders seeks to highlight the strength and spirit of this often-overlooked corner of Britain.
